It’d been less than 3 hours since Sunny woke up to find herself alone and lost. She hardly remembered what had happened just the night before. Fearful howling and panicked pawsteps as everyone ran around, fleeing from an enemy Sunny hadn’t stuck around long enough to see. Her legs burned from how long and fast she’d ran. She had no way to telling how far she was from home. She could’ve followed her own scent back, had she ever been taught to do such a thing. As it was, Sunny didn’t know anything about living alone. She couldn’t hunt, she didn’t know how to find shelter, and she didn’t have the patience or will to have a sense of self-preservation.
“I’m gonna die…”
The Australian Shepherd didn’t bother to hide the self-pity in her whine. She wanted someone to hear. That was the whole idea of complaining. Sooner or later, someone would come by and help her. That’s what she told herself as she wandered around aimlessly, dragging her feet and complaining now and again. “Hungry….” She moaned to no one. Without realizing it, she stepped out of the forest and walked onto asphalt. The setting she found herself in was one like she’d never seen before. It was almost enough to distract her from complaining. Almost.
“Uuugh. And now I don’t even know where I am!”
She continued to walk further into the town, past the run down homes and shops and over the cracked road. Sunny’s parents had never spoken much of humans—and even if they had, she probably wasn’t listening. All she knew was that there were none left, so it wasn’t something she’d ever put much thought into. “I want breakfast…” Just as she said that, an unfamiliar scent hit her nose. She sniffed, her ears perked. For the first time since she’d gotten lost, she put a little pep in her step as she followed the scent. It brought her to a weird shiny, gray container. Without much thought, she pushed it over. The loud clang it made caused her to jump. Strange contents fell out from the top, which was open and hollow inside. Sunny stuck her nose into the garbage, trying to find the source of the smell. Her tailless rump hung in the air and she was completely obvious to her surroundings.
